Activision's popular toy/game hybrid Skylanders isn't new to the tablet world. Two years ago, the video game publisher launched Skylanders: Cloud Patrol, a simple arcade shooter where players took out waves of enemies.

This fall, the franchise makes an even bigger leap on to tablets with Skylanders: Trap Team. Along with launching for consoles and Nintendo's 3DS, the full version of Trap Team will be available for tablet.

The package includes a Bluetooth-enabled portal that players place their figurines on to bring them to life in the game, as well as a smaller, traditional wireless game controller that fits nicely into the bottom of the portal.

The game will be available for Apple's iPad, Kindle Fire and Android tablets.

Based on a quick demo of Trap Team running on iPad, it definitely seems to pack the full Skylanders experience from consoles. After buying the $74.99 Starter pack, players download an app featuring the full game.

For those new to Trap Team, players use a special material called Traptanium to capture countless villains following a prison outbreak. The updated portal features what looks like a small prison cell where players input a physical trap that is pulled from the game. New Skylander characters come equipped with weapons and gear made of Traptanium to help them easily capture villains.

For the tablet version, the portal also includes a slot where players can slide a tablet to prop it up and play. The wireless controller is smaller than standard, but feels surprisingly comfortable. Unfortunately, it only works with Skylanders and not other third-party games. Considering standalone tablet controllers are more expensive than the Skylanders package, it seems like a missed opportunity for players also seeking a less expensive controller.

Players that would prefer not to use the wireless controller can switch to touchscreen controls consisting of a virtual thumbstick and buttons.

Skylanders: Trap Team will launch on October 5.
