When Activision released the original Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure a few years ago, it gave life to otherwise static toys by making them come alive on the TV screen.

Now, with the newly-revealed Skylanders Trap Team, Activision looking to do it all over again by making the game itself come to life in your living room.

"So you're going to be taking something from the game - the digital world - and bring it into the physical world," the game's Executive Producer Jeff Poffenbarger said.

In Skylanders Trap Team, players seek out and defeat the most wanted villains in all of Skylands by capturing them in "magical" traps then virtually pulling them out of the game and into real life. Players can then send the villains back into the game, where they play as them to fight for good rather than for evil.

Because of the new gameplay mechanic, Trap Team will include a new Portal of Power perpheral -- called the Traptanium Portal -- which enables players to not only bring their Skylanders to life in-game, but also capture villains using the new traps. Once they've defeated the villains, players will be able to place a trap into the new portal to capture them. They will also be able to hear the villains from inside the traps, thanks to a speaker that's built into the new version of the portal.

"The characters will be able to talk from the speaker," Poffenbarger said. "And then if you want to play as them, you just put it in [the platform] or switch to them and they will go into the game."

This new play pattern also gives players the option to switch between playing as a Skylander hero or a villain at any time, creating fun and unique "tag team" gameplay. In addition, fans can even take their traps and their Skylanders characters to their friends' houses for co-operative adventures across all console game systems.

Skylanders Trap Team introduces a new line of Skylanders toys/characters known as 'Trap Masters.' They are in addition to a collection of new standard characters and re-posed Skylanders characters from past games. Thankfully, for those who've played any of the three previous games in the series will find that their already existing characters will be fully compatible with the new game.

"All of the previous Skylanders, they all work in this game and they all can actually use the same functionality," Poffenbarger said. "We support over all the toys. There's about 150 out there right now."

Scheduled to be released on Oct. 5, Skylanders Trap Team will be releasing onto Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and Nintendo's Wii and Wii U. There will also be a unique Trap Team adventure for the Nintendo 3DS, but not details are yet available for that version of the game.
