SACRAMENTO - Nowadays, everyone's a critic. That makes first impressions even more important for restaurants.

So Paul Katsch, CEO and cofounder of Sacramento foodie start up Dinnerwire, is focusing on the front of the house with a new app called RezKu.

"We're trying to take everything that happens at the restaurant's front of house so it's much easier and much smoother," Katsch explained. "So when a guest comes into the restaurant they have a better experience."

RezKu is a cloud-based restaurant reservation and front-of-house management app that runs on Google Chrome. Workers can arrange tables, check wait list times, customize guest preferences, even text you when your table is ready.

It's supposed to mean better service for the customer the moment you walk through the doors.

"We love it," said Zachariah Federowski, manager of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade neighborhood. Farrell's has been using RezKu for eight months.

"It helps us do everything from manage the flow of business to all of our reservations and waitlist," Federowski said.

Katsch won't say how many restaurants are using RezKu. He's got some competition. But he's ready to give other existing restaurant reservation companies like OpenTable a run for their money.

He came up with RezKu two-and-a-half years ago when he was running his own restaurant.

"We said okay, let's start from scratch," Katsch recalled. "Let's think of something outside the box and let's build something."

For Katsch, a UC Davis grad with a degree in genetics, solving problems is in his DNA.

"This is in my blood," Katsch added. "I've been an entrepreneur for 25 years. I've owned 30 something companies. This is what I do."

And he's not done yet. He and his team are working on three more products which he believes will help restaurants.
