California Chrome finished in a dead heat for fourth at the Belmont Stakes, and the wait for the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 will last at least another year. Tonalist, a horse that did not race in either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness, won the race.
After the race, California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn flipped out. He called out officials for allowing fresh horses that had not run in earlier Triple Crown races to compete at Belmont Park.
"I thought he was gaining ground but he didn't have anything apparently. He's been in three big races. These other horses set one out and it's not fair for the horses who are in it from Day 1…. If you've got a horse that earns points, that runs in the Kentucky Derby, those horses should be the only ones who should run in all three races."
