WILLIS, Texas -- Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a mystery in the Willis area, involving a teenager and her stepfather. Her mother says she ran away, and he went after her and now both have disappeared.

Mary Hernandez Soto can't bring herself to leave the house much lately.

"She's going to get here," said Soto. "I don't know when she's going to get here. I have to be here."

She's waiting for her daughter, 14-year-old Evelyn Carrillo, to come home.

"I need Evelyn home," said Soto. "That's my child. I don't function well without Evelyn."

Evelyn ran off on Sunday. She was upset that her new stepfather, Edgar Soto, was leaving for work as a truck driver.

"Daddy don't go, don't go, you don't spend time with us, you're always working," said Mary Soto, describing her daughter's reaction. "He's going to leave, I already know he's going to leave, I'll just leave. So she stormed off, ran off

Mary and Edgar, who married less than two months ago, both ran after Evelyn, first on foot, then in a car. Eventually they split up, and as the hours passed searching, Mary's husband stopped answering his phone.

"I'm texting and calling, no answer, and I'm like where is he at? Now I'm looking for her, looking for the truck," said Soto.

She hasn't seen or heard from either one since Sunday afternoon, his phone is now turned off and Evelyn doesn't have hers with her. There's been just one possible lead.

"I have a feeling he has her," said Soto. "I have a feeling that he probably found her on Sunday."Friends went to a nearby McDonald's, at FM 1097 and I-45 Sunday evening, to hand out "missing" flyers. Evelyn's mom says one of the employees there said they had seen her earlier in the day, possibly with a man. But a manager told KHOU so far they haven't found any sign of her on their surveillance video.

Now every minute that passes without a phone call makes her more worried and confused.

"I don't think he would ever hurt her," said Soto. "I do not, physically hurt her, no. I don't think that at all. But I don't know what's going on."

So she'll keep the door open, for a child, and a husband, who should be safe inside.

Edward is driving a 2001 Ford F-250 pickup truck with an extended cab. The Texas license plate # is 83NHP9.
