WHITE CLOUD, Mich. (WZZM) -- Neighbors say the girl who abandoned her newborn baby alongside a Newaygo County road Monday is only 14 years old.
"I don't know her personally, but I know who she is," says neighbor Kathleen Neal. "Maybe she just was scared and didn't know what to do or how to handle it."
The hours-old infant was found Monday morning along Marion road near White Cloud.
Jeffrey Kopp lives across from the teenage mother; he found the baby while walking his dog.
"I was taking my dog for a walk and he went to pull me toward some bushes," recalls Kopp. "I went to see what he was pulling towards and there was a baby in the bushes. At first I thought it was a rock, but it was a newborn; the umbilical cord was still hooked to it."
Neighbors say they didn't realize the girl was pregnant.
"She is not a big, heavy girl, but she is a little chunky," notes neighbor Kathleen Neal. "She never wore tight clothes or anything like that to where you could really see a baby bump."
The young mother and her baby were taken to the hospital where they were in good condition.
"I just couldn't believe anybody would leave a baby like that," says Kopp,
"I really think she was afraid," says Neal. "Afraid and scared. Her mind was probably going 90 miles an hour. 'What do I do? What's going to happen?'"
Among the many questions police will try to answer, who is the father of the infant?
Neighbors say they never saw the 14-year-old with a boyfriend.
"Not that I saw," says Neal. "But I don't know."
