The 30-year-old admitted gang member is looking at firearm, felon in possession of a firearm and gang-related charges, as well as violation of probation, according to the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office.

The D.A.'s office says Stockton police stopped Meeks and two others Wednesday morning as they left a home where a search warrant was about to be served. One of the passengers in the car Meeks was driving is on probation, which allowed officers to search the vehicle. They reported recovering an unregistered and loaded Springfield Armory .45 caliber XD(M) semi-automatic handgun with two extended magazines, a 9mm round of ammunition, and what appeared to be a small amount of marijuana in the car.

Meeks has prior convictions for grand theft, resisting arrest and is a documented gang member, the D.A.'s office says.

At his court appearance Friday, Meeks claimed he has no money and could not hire an attorney. He was appointed a public defender.

Meeks' mother, meantime, has started a GoFundMe website for his defense. As of early Friday afternoon, there was more than $1,000 in the fund.
