KAUFMAN, Texas — Eight pit bulls were seized from a home after an 85-year-old woman was found dead Monday inside the residence.

Police said the woman appeared to have suffered deadly wounds as the result of a dog attack.

According to police, authorities were called to the home at about 4:46 p.m. Monday. Upon their arrival, they found the body of Dorothy Hamilton in the living room and two pit bulls roaming inside the residence.

Capt. Ed Black, a spokesman with the Kaufman Police Department, said Hamilton's son told police his dogs were staying with his mother in a locked room for several months. However, an initial probe of the scene revealed the dogs were able to break through the door.

"A total of eight pit bulls were seized from the property, including the two animals from inside the residence," Black said.

Residents said have complained about the dogs before. Police Chief Dana Whitaker confirmed his department received complaints about dogs at the home, but only "dogs at-large calls." Whitaker said they didn't receive calls about vicious dogs on the loose.
