STOCKTON - The Stockton gang suspect who became widely talked about because of his mug shot is now in federal custody. Jeremy Meeks faces a federal gun charge, meaning there will be no more pictures of him in custody.
Meeks was arrested during a Stockton police gang sweep several weeks ago. He would have been just another inmate had it not been for his mug shot which generated national buzz, generally among women admiring his looks.
Though Meeks faced about a dozen state charges, the Federal Government is now charging him with a single violation; felon in possession of a firearm. That one charge could lead to a prison term of 10 years and a fine of $250,000. San Joaquin County District Attorney spokesman Robert Himelblau said federal gun charges lead to longer prison sentences.
In court Tuesday, Meeks was told state charges against him had been dropped in favor of the federal charge. In the federal legal system, pictures and video are not permitted.
