On Thursday, a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Jeremy Meeks, 30, with being a felon in possession of a firearm, specifically a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Meeks was arrested last month during a police operation in Stockton. He faces several felony firearm charges. Meeks told News10 that he was a gang member and that he had a gun in the trunk of his car when he was arrested.

San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office spokesperson Robert Himelblau said when a suspect ends up being charged by both the state and the federal government, the district attorney's office will often step aside because the feds have the "bigger hammer," meaning the suspect could likely serve more time if convicted.

Himelblau also said Meeks could be moved to Sacramento for federal court appearances and prosecution. However, that decision will not be made until next week.

Currently, Meeks is being held in San Joaquin County Jail on $1.1 million bail.
