SACRAMENTO - A ruptured gas line forced the evacuation of about 50 people and the closure of Broadway in Sacramento Friday morning.

Sacramento firefighters at the scene said the two-inch line was punctured during construction work in the area.

PG&E crews responded to the scene and shutdown Broadway between 3rd Avenue and 34th Street as they worked to stop the leak.

The leak was capped and the gas was shut off shortly before 1 p.m. PG&E spokesperson Brandi Ehlers said it took about three hours to repair the leak after gas was shut off.

After a final inspection, residents were able to go back to their homes before the evening.
