SACRAMENTO – A 47-year-old man was killed Thursday night when he hit a deer and then lost control of his vehicle.

A release from the California Highway Patrol stated the man was heading west on Pass Road near Kellogg Road at a high rate of speed when he hit a deer. The driver then lost control of his vehicle which veered off the roadway, collided with a dirt embankment, flipped and caught fire.

Witnesses tried to pull the man from the burning car but were unsuccessful.

It was unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident, according to the release.
