SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Police say a shooting at Peregrine Park in North Natomas has killed one person and wounded six others, including a child.
It happened just after 5 p.m. in the 3000 block of Guadalajara Way.
Neighbors say several families were at a birthday party for a one-year-old child. Police believe several suspects walked up to the party and opened fire.
"I just hate that someone would come up here and would shoot at a kid's party. That's horrible," said one concerned parent who did not want to be identified.
Among the several dozen people waiting for answers at the park was the mother-in-law of the man who was shot and killed.
That person, identified by police only as a man in his 20's, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"For this to happen, nobody knows nothing. To see him just lying there. They took him away too early. Just too early too early!!" said Denise James.
"A coward walked up to this party. There was no guns here. He came in with a gun-whoever shot my nephew," said the victim's uncle who did not want to be identified.
Police are looking for several suspects, and they believe there was more than one shooter.
The shooters approached the party on foot and possibly fled the scene in a car, according to police.
Police say the other victims were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. One of the victims is a 7-year-old child. No other information about the victims was available.
No arrests have been made, but police believe the shooting is gang-related.
Police say such violence is unusual at the park, which has a children's play area, several picnic areas, basketball and volleyball courts, a softball field and a bike trail.
