A woman was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon on Interstate 5 in Modesto.
The 38-year-old woman was ejected from her 1999 Ford Explorer and suffered fatal injuries, Modesto Police Officer S. Buehner said. Her identity will be released after next of kin is notified.
Buehner said the SUV was going 70 miles per hour on I-5, just south of Oak Flat Road, when the Explorer's right-rear tire blew. The driver then lost control of the SUV. The Explorer left the roadway, hit the embankment, overturned and came to a rest on its left side in the second lane on the highway.
The woman was wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened. Buehner said the seat belt seemed to have failed and allowed the driver to be ejected from the crash.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash.
