A grass fire destroyed three townhouses in Modesto Friday evening.

Four other homes, a RV and three cars were also damaged by the fire, Modesto Regional Fire Authority Interim Chief Sean Slamon said.

One person was taken to the hospital to get treatment for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The grass fire started around 6 p.m. along the old 132 bypass area, near N. Emerald and Loletta avenues. The grass fire burned 2 to 4 acres from N. Carpenter Road to nearly Highway 99. Slamon said dry grass and windy conditions made the fire spread quickly.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire within two hours. They remained at the scene through the night and mopped up the area.

On Saturday, Slamon said the cause of the fire was an open fire pit from a homeless camp near the neighborhood. Law enforcement have a description of a suspect who started the fire, but don't have any leads on the suspect.
