A bank robbery suspect killed in a shootout with deputies in Olivehurst after a high-speed chase from Marysville Tuesday afternoon was identified by Yuba County Undersheriff Jerry Read as 43-year-old Christopher George Louk.

Louk was dubbed the "Man-bag Robber" by the FBI because he carried a man's bag during the crimes. Yuba City police confirmed Louk was responsible for two bank robberies in their town, Read said.

Louk was pronounced dead at a dead-end road near Arboga Road and Grand Avenue after he exchanged gunfire with two Yuba County sheriff's deputies, according to Read.

"All of a sudden, I hear all kinds of firing going on. I mean, just shots. Bam, bam, going all over," said Olivehurst resident Sally Escamilla, who witnessed the shooting.

Sheriff's investigators said it was unclear if the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or from shots fired by deputies.

The high-speed chase started around 1:45 p.m. at Willow Street, near 8th Street, when deputies spotted a man who matched the description of a bank robbery suspect wanted by the FBI. The man was suspected of robbing a store in Marysville, a bank in Yuba City and another bank in Chico. Read said the deputies saw the suspect sitting in a SUV and then drive away. Deputies followed the suspect and requested for backup.

Read said when the deputies tried to make a traffic stop on E Street with the help of Marysville police officers, the suspect sped away, eventually driving onto Highway 70. The suspect took the Plumas Lake Boulevard exit, with law enforcement still in pursuit.

After taking the exit, the suspect drove over the road embankment, into a field and onto Arboga Road. From there, he drove onto the dead-end street. It was there the man and deputies shot at each other.

Read said after the gunfire, the deputies approached the SUV when they didn't see any movement. Emergency medical responders who had also arrived performed life-saving procedures on the suspect, but he was pronounced dead at the scene around 2:20 p.m.

Read said the incident is being investigated.
