A 5-month-old baby who was stabbed in Folsom Thursday afternoon died of his injuries later that night, police said.

A second victim, a woman, was also stabbed by the suspect. She taken to the hospital and was in critical condition, Folsom police Officer Andrew Bates said.

The suspect was shot by a police officer who responded to the scene. Bates said the suspect died on his way to the hospital.

Bates confirmed on Friday the suspect was 20-year-old Jose M. Reyes Torres.

"The first officer to arrive confronted a single suspect who was armed with a large knife. That officer shot the suspect," Bates said. "He was pronounced [dead] on the way [to the hospital] after being shot. He did struggle and fight with officers until they were able to get him into custody."

The incident started around 2:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on Montrose Drive. Investigators believe Reyes Torres stabbed his baby cousin and his aunt, Arela Aguilar, before officers arrived.

"I just heard two gunshots and a whole bunch of screaming," a witness said. He said the female victim lay bleeding in the front yard of her apartment complex. "Had her arms by her chest and stomach."

Other neighbors described a scene of chaos.

"A woman covered in blood and animals and kids being taken away into unmarked vehicles," neighbor Joshua Smith said.

Bates said only a single shot was fired by the responding officer.

Police said those involved were Spanish-speaking and communication was hampered. Reyes Torres lived near his aunt and baby cousin who was identified the following morning as Roberto Varela, according to police.

Neighbors said they could not imagine a motive for the stabbings.

"That's more shocking than the whole thing, that a baby was involved," Smith said. "That's just horrible."

Police continue to investigate what happened.
