SACRAMENTO – A cow on the lam had Elk Grove Police and California Highway Patrol officers scrambling to corral her Wednesday morning.
California Highway Patrol first reported the incident around 3:18 a.m. as the bovine was walking on the right side of northbound Highway 99.
Officers herded the cow away from the roadway and north along Highway 99 until it exited the highway and wandered into a field next to Masonic cemetery on Elk Grove Blvd. where members of the impromptu cattle drive tried to coerce the cow into one of several livestock trailers brought to the scene.
The cow however managed to escape and fled to a nearby shopping center before running into an adjacent field.
Deciding to hand the matter over to an expert after about four hours, officials called in a cowboy who lassoed the cow. The animal was then put into a trailer to be removed from the scene.
