A man tried to kidnap and rape a 15-year-old girl in Woodland. (Tuesday, May 27, 2014) News10

Woodland police are searching for a man who tried to kidnap and rape a 15-year-old girl Thursday morning.

Police said the attack happened on East Gum Avenue, near Kate Lane, as the girl was walking to school. The teen was walking on the sidewalk when a man jumped out in front of her, grabbed her by force and dragged her to a nearby wooded area. The man then tried to sexually assault the teen, but she was able to break free from his grip and run away. She was not psychically injured in the attack.

Many students use the exact same path to walk to school each day, and the reported incident has given them cause for concern.

"I didn't think it would happen during the day, like in the morning when a girl is walking to school," Pioneer High School student Lilliana Azevedo said.

"You just always have to have someone with you," Pioneer High School student Dezarae Lee said.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his mid-30s, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, with a medium stocky build. He has slicked-back brown hair and a thick brown mustache. He was last seen wearing a green Oakland A's baseball cap.

Police are asking for the community's help to catch the suspect. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Woodland police.

Police said the attack was reported on the weekend. Sgt. Brett Hancock said crimes should be reported as soon as possible, which can help solve the crime sooner.

"It helps us trying to solve a crime if it's reported immediately," Hancock said. "Some instances, people don't report it immediately."
