SACRAMENTO - Sacramento County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man in Antelope after he pointed a gun at them early Sunday morning, sheriff's spokesperson Lisa Bowman said.
The Sacramento County coroner identified the man as Matthew Ryan Shannon, 41, of Antelope.
Deputies were called to the area of Antelope Road and North Loop Boulevard at 2:15 a.m. after receiving calls about gunshots in the area.
According to Bowman, deputies located Shannon carrying an assault rifle and ordered him to drop the weapon. However, he pulled out a hand gun from his clothing and pointed it at them instead.
Bowman said deputies shot Shannon fearing for their safety and the safety of the public. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Nobody else was injured in the shooting.
The two deputies involved were placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation, Bowman said.
