The winners of the California State Fair's wine competition were announced Tuesday morning on the steps of the Capitol building.

There were 2,829 wine entries in this year's competition. A panel of judges awarded 2,068 medals to competitors.

Dozens of people stood below the Capitol steps to witness the unveiling of the winning red, white, pink, sparkling and dessert wines. California Golden Bear trophies were awarded to the top seven wines.

"It's spectacular to be able to recognize the talent and achievements of the ones that receive the awards," California State Fair CEO Rick Pickering said. "But we also put their products on display at the California state fair, on our website in markets around the state of California whether it's a gold metal or double gold, silver bronze medal winner these wineries go out and cheerlead that in their local community. Many of them will actually put our labels on their bottles and in their literature on their websites. They will say they were the best of the best winner at the California State Fair."

The first state fair wine competition was held in 1855. The competition is the oldest wine event in the country. A complete list of the award winning wines is available at castatefair.org
