The California Highway Patrol shared video of its helicopter rescue of an injured mountain bike rider Wednesday.
The bicyclist, 42-year-old Michael Gnafakis of Citrus Heights, crashed on the Upper Lake Clementine trail in Placer County, the CHP said. Gnafakis, who was alone, was able to use his cellphone to call for help.
The CHP helicopter crew of pilot Sgt. Mark Nalley, Flight Officer/paramedic Jimmy Hendrix, pilot Officer Brent Fallis and Flight Officer Troy Marks responded. Gnafakis was airlifted to Grizzly Flat landing zone where he was picked up and flown to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
The CHP said if Gnafakis hadn't been wearing a helmet, he would have been even more seriously injured.
