STOCKTON - St. Mary's girls basketball coach Tom Gonsalves said Friday he stands behind his decision Thursday night to call off two basketball games after violence in the stands.

"There were three women and a big guy hovering over my freshman coach's wife. One of the ladies was punching her in the face," Gonsalves said.

Gonsalves said McNair High School didn't provide enough security so he pulled the junior varsity and varsity teams from the gym and the final two games of the evening weren't played.

"I was just thinking of safety for everybody. If we have to forfeit the game, we forfeit the game. I just need to take care of the kids," the coach said.

McNair's principal would only say Friday there was adequate security at the game, and he was disappointed the later games weren't played.

Stockton police spokesman Officer Joe Silva said the department was investigating the alleged battery but hadn't yet located the woman who was allegedly hitting the coach's wife.
