Elementary students from across the state were in San Joaquin County for the California State Elementary Spelling Bee Saturday morning.

The competition got intense as Alameda County's Christina Yu pulled off a victory when she was asked to spell the word "hyperbole."

"I was just like, oh my God, I'm so thankful for everyone who supported me and so grateful that I know this word, and I was appreciating everything," Spelling Champion Christina Yu said.

Yu was the first girl to win the competition in the four years it has been hosted in San Joaquin County. She went home with an iPad Air and a big trophy.

News10's Tim Daly served as Spell Master for the event.
