ROCKLIN, Calif. – A popular boys' gymnastics coach accused of getting an underage girl drunk and then raping her is behind bars at Placer County Jail.
Rocklin police said Daniel Zmrzel, 21, raped a 17-year-old girl after he gave her so much alcohol she passed out.
"It was a relationship going for a few months, not a random encounter," Det. Zack Krempin said.
Zmrzel is accused of rape of a drugged victim, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years of age difference, oral copulation with person under 18 years of age, penetration with a foreign object with a victim under 18 years of age and two counts of contact with a minor with the intent of sex.
Rocklin police said their investigation started over the weekend when they got calls of two teens drunk on the street, and officers took them home. The next day, they got a call from one of those teenager's parents who said their daughter had been raped.
Days later, Zmrzel was taken into custody. He was arrested Wednesday at Extreme Gymnastics, where he was a long time boys gymnastics coach.
"I was completely surprised by allegations," Extreme Gymnastics owner William Woltz said. "I didn't think this would happen to a kid who had been in the gym since he was 6 years old."
Woltz said Zmrzel was one of his best coaches and he trusted him.
"It does not sound like Daniel. He was a loyal coach," Woltz said. "None of the were kids approached by him."
Police said Extreme Gymnastics has no involvement in Zmrzel's allegations. Parents said they're standing behind him.
"He would truly die and give his life for these boys. He has coached my boys for a number of years," one mom said.
The mom didn't want to give her name, but said she does not think he's capable of the crime.
Both parents and Woltz said they feel for both Zmrzel and his alleged victim. Regardless of what happens next, they know lives have been forever changed.
"For the sake of both families (I hope) whatever happened truly comes out and everyone gets some sort of peace," another parent said.
Rocklin police want to know if there are any other underage victims. Anyone with information about the incident or other victims is urged to call police.
