Fairfield police investigating a crash Tuesday determined the incident didn't happen as claimed by a mother and daughter who were involved.
Instead, Sharae Massengale, the driver, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and her mother, Gail Massengale, was cited for giving false information, Lt. Matt Bloesch said.
The pair were found where a silver Thunderbird had struck a tree in the area of San Miguel Drive and El Verano Court. Bloesch said Gail Massengale was lying on the ground and saying her back was hurt. She was taken to North Bay Hospital.
Gail Massengale told officers a dog had run in front of the car so she swerved to avoid hitting it and instead hit the tree.
Her daughter said she had been the passenger and claimed she hurt her leg in the collision, Bloesch said.
However, police checked security cameras in the neighborhood which revealed Sharae Massengale had been the driver and her mother wasn't even in the car, Bloesch said. Upon further questioning, Gail Massengale admitted to the deception, according to the lieutenant.
