MODESTO, CA - A man was found shot dead and left on the side of a rural road east of Grayson Wednesday overnight, say Stanislaus County sheriff's detectives.

The man was identified as 32-year-old Ernie Aguayo, a Modesto resident.

Detectives learned of the victim from a concerned citizen who called 911 about 1 a.m. Thursday morning about what he first thought was a dead animal on the side of Laird Road was a human being.

Investigators determined Aquayo had been shot. He was found in an area described as surrounded by orchards and with little lighting.

Detectives do not know who killed Aquayo. Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call Det. Darwin Hatfield at (209) 525-7100.
