MODESTO,CA (AP) - Authorities say a 91-year-old man reported missing from Modesto last week has been found dead in Tuolumne County.

The Modesto Bee reportsthe body of Amos McElvaine was found around 9 a.m. Monday by someone cutting wood in a forest near the community of Long Barn.

Investigators don't know why McElvaine was in the area, which is about 70 miles northeast of Modesto.

Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Oliver says McElvaine's car was parked on a U.S. Forest Service road, about 100 yards away from where his body was found. Oliver says the car did not appear to be out of gas.

Family members say McElvaine didn't know anyone in the area and they are trying to determine why he drove there.
