FAIRFIELD, Calif. - A person suspected of driving from Fairfield to Benicia on the wrong side of two interstates was involved in a fatal head-on wreck Sunday.
California Highway Patrol officer Ralph Caggiano said the CHP received a call of a driver entering I-80 in the wrong direction near the truck scales in Fairfield around 8 p.m.
The driver headed westbound on the eastbound side of the interstate and merged southbound onto the northbound side of I-680, said Caggiano.
After driving about five miles in the wrong direction on I-680, the driver collided head-on with another vehicle just north of Marshview Rd. in Benicia, Caggiano said.
One person was killed in the crash and the entire northbound side of the interstate was closed for a period of time.
Caggiano did not say who died in the wreck, or whether drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor.
