SACRAMENTO - The boyfriend of a Manteca mom has been booked into jail on child abuse death charges after Manteca police detectives investigated the Saturday death of the woman's toddler daughter.

According to Manteca Police Department Lt. Tony Souza, suspect Longino Lamont Tolefree Jr., 21, and a friend brought the 19-month-old girl to Doctor's Hospital for "medical issues." Doctors caring for the little girl called for police after examining the child. The child was pronounced dead before officers reached the emergency room.

"His excuse was that she fell down," Souza said. "And based off the information from the coroner'soffice, we knew it wasn't making any sense."

On Monday, the San Joaquin County coroner performed an autopsy on the girl and ruled herdeath a homicide, according to Souza. Investigators said the girl suffered severe internal injuries.

Detectives arrested Tolefree at his job in Lathrop Monday evening on suspicion of child abuse on a child under 8 causing death, guardian infliction injury to a child under 8 causing death, and corporal injury to a child under 8. Bail was set at $1,050,000.

Tolefree is scheduled to be formally charged in Manteca Superior Court on Wednesday.

Souzasaid Tolefree and his girlfriend have a 5-month-old daughter together, but he is not the father of the girl who died.

Police said child protective services were called to investigate. They said they don't believe the 5-month-old is in immediate danger.
