CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA- A Sacramento woman has been arrested on suspicion of intentionally drugging her baby, causing his death, say police detectives.
The 7 and a half-month-old boy was found dead in an apartment on the 7000 block of Auburn Boulevard in Citrus Heights onSept. 28, 2012, according topolice spokespersonBryan Fritsch. There were no observed signs of trauma on the child or foul play. According to the Sacramento County coroner's website, the initial finding was the baby died from SIDS. However, results from toxicology tests on the child determined he died from a drug overdose.
Fritschsaid their investigation conducted in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office and its crime lab, Sacramento County Coroner's Office,Child Protective Services and medical professionals concluded the victim's mother, Sarah Stephens, knowingly gave the controlled substances to her son. The D.A. has filed second-degree murder and felony child endangerment charges against 32-year-old Stephens.
Fritschsaiddetectives arrested Stephens on Wednesday and she was booked into Sacramento County Jail.
