SACRAMENTO, CA - Who knew Sacramento was the final frontier? If you're a Star Trek fan you'll recognize the Klingons and the Romulans as alien races, but the names have a whole different meaning in south Sacramento.
It may not look like an interplanetary crossroads, but Sacramento's intersection of Klingon and Romulan courts got a lot of attention recently after a series of posts on the social news website Reddit.
Streets named after Star Trek aliens may seem cool to fans, but for Michael Lee, who lives at the intersection, it's not that big of a deal. He didn't even know the names were references to the sci-fi series until News10 told him.
For other residents like Simone Kyles, the names lost their charm a long time ago.
"I want to meet the guy or the person who decided to do this. I really do," Kyles said.
Asked what she would say, "I would say, 'what were you thinking?'" Kyles replied.
The person who named the intersection left the Sacramento County Planning Commission a long time ago. Planning officials sent News10 a diagram of the area that dated back to June 1977. Maybe the original planner thought the court looked a little like the Starship Enterprise from above, or maybe the surrounding neighborhood just wasn't complete with Nova, Planet, Galaxy and Satellite parkways. Whatever the thinking, the decision has made giving directions a little embarrassing for Kyles.
"It is because it's like, Klingon, and everybody's like, 'Klingon, isn't that like Star...' I was like, 'yes it is, it's Star whatever, but just come down the street anyway, you know, that's the street I live on,'" Kyles explained.
On the other hand, Perla Lewis said the familiarity of the names makes it easy for her friends to find her.
"When you come in, the left side is Romulan, so you just come straight, Klingon Court" Lewis said.
We may not know exactly why, but at some point, someone thought these were good ideas for street names. As for the people who live here, Klingon and Romulan are simply home.
