Picture playing a video game in your living room, only the environments, explosions and other effects spill out beyond the television screen onto the walls.

Microsoft is attempting to make this real with a fascinating project called IllumiRoom. It was featured during Samsung's keynote address at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

As developers for Microsoft Research explain it, IllumiRoom uses a Kinect for Windows camera and projector that can "change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences."

The video posted below gives a great tour of IllumiRoom. For example, it shows a kart-racing game set on a snow-covered mountain, with snowflakes falling around the TV screen.

No word on how soon video game players will have access to IllumiRoom.
