SACRAMENTO- As the hostage situation developed at the Jack in the Box in the College Greens area, a visiting bail bonds agent was among the first to arrive on scene with a gun.
Bail Bond Agent Dan Escamilla of Orange County told News10 on the phone that he jumped into action.
"I picked up my gun and ran to the back of the Jack in the Box."
The incident started around 12:30 p.m. Saturday as an armed robber, later identified as 26-year-old Xang Khang, barricaded himself inside of the Jack in the Box restaurant on the 8300 block of Folsom Boulevard.
When the first Jack in the Box employee ran out the back door yelling for help, the owner of a nearby Mexican restaurant called 911.
Agent Escamilla was with his girlfriend eating lunch at the Mexican restaurant. He grabbed his gun and he ran to the back door of the Jack in the Box before police arrived.
"When I peeked inside, I saw an older Indian woman who was standing 15-feet inside the door with her hands up," said Escamilla.
A few minutes later, a young employee scurried toward the back door by Escamilla and managed to escape.
"As she was running out, she indicated to me the suspect had placed a gun inside her mouth, inside her lips. She seemed pretty traumatized," said Escamilla.
Security guard Wayne Hale, who was at the opposite end of the shopping center, arrived on scene with the first few officers.
"I heard he hit one of the girls that he held hostage," said Hale.
The terror continued for a few more hours, but it ultimately was ended by a sniper who mortally wounded Khang.
Alan Smith was supposed to be making repairs at the nearby Bank of America branch Saturday afternoon. He believes it was an appropriate ending.
"Well, he got what he deserved. He started something he shouldn't have done," said Smith.
According to several of the hostages, Khang, didn't demand any money.
They say he seemed agitated and frustrated.
Khang's criminal history includes felony domestic violence, a misdemeanor DUI, and possession of controlled a substance and drug paraphernalia.
