SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A man suspected of holding two women hostageinside of a SacramentoJack in the Boxwas shot and killedby authorities Saturday afternoon; both hostages were released unharmed, Sacramento police said.

The incident started around 12:30 p.m. Saturday as an armed robbery, Sacramento police Officer Doug Morse said.

The suspect wasbarricaded insideof the Jack in the Box restaurant on the 8300 block of Folsom Boulevard withtwo employees ashostages for nearlythree hours.

Fortunately, around 2:57 p.m., one hostageescaped from the store unharmed.

Police say that due to the grave danger the remaining hostage was in, SWAT officers fired at the suspect from the outside of the restaurant. Officers immediately moved in, rescued the hostage, disarmed the suspect and called for medical aid.

Morse said the suspect was transported to the hospital, after getting shot at least once in the chest, where he later died.

Police locked down the College Greens Shopping Center, at Folsom Boulevard and Notre Dame Drive, where the restaurant is located. A few businesses were evacuated, while others have been locked down, during the standoff

Sacramento County sheriff's deputies and SWAT responded to scene; the Hostage Negotiation Team was also called to the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

The name of the suspect is not known at this time and will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.
