STOCKTON, CA - Stockton firefighters helped out Stockton police Friday afternoon by detaining a carjacking suspect.

The suspect, identified as Ellis Billsberry, 39, allegedly stole a vehicle and then carjacked another person near San Joaquin Street and Vine Street around 12:06 p.m.

StocktonFire DepartmentCapt. Javier Martinez said firefighters got a call about a man passed out in a vehicle. When they arrived and tried to help Billsberry, he jumped out of the vehicle and into another moving vehicle through the passenger side window. Martinez said Billsberry threatened to stab the driver if he didn't continue to drive.

The firefighters then found a backpack with a gun in the stolen vehicle.

About two hours later, firefighters got another call of a man passed out near the first incident. When they arrived, they found Billsberry unresponsive at the corner, Martinez said.

Three firefighters remained at the scene, restraining Billsberry by each grabbing a limb until Stockton police officers arrived. Martinez said the Billsberry was probably on drugs and didn't put up much of a fight when the firefighters restrained him.

Billsberry was arrested for stealing a vehicle, possessing stolen property, kidnapping, carjacking and weapons charges.
