NEW YORK (AP) - October 26. That's the date the Windows world has been awaiting for years now. It's when Microsoft says it will release the latest version of its operating system - Windows 8.

The upgrade is designed to work better with touch screens and on tablet computers.

The official launch date will be when PC makers can start selling computers with the OS - and those who already have PCs can download it as an upgrade.

As for the cost - Microsoft is being a little kinder to users as in years past. Windows 8 as an upgrade for those running Windows XP, Vista or 7 will cost $40 - much less than previous upgrades.

And those who bought a Windows 7 computer on June 2 or later can get upgraded to Windows 8 for just $15.
