MAXWELL, Calif. (AP) - Officials say fire crews battling a large wildfire near the farming community of Maxwell in rural Colusa County continue to make progress in containing the blaze.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Daniel Berlant said the so-called Sites Complex fire is 80 percent contained.

Berlant said the nearly 1,300 firefighters on the scene have gained the upperhand on the blaze and are working on putting out hot spots.

The fire, which originally began as five separate fires, has consumed about 6.5 square miles, or nearly 4,200 acres.

Berlant said crews expect to have the fire under control by the weekend.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
