Sofia Vergara, the Colombian-born beauty who stars in TV's Modern Family, just turned 40 and just got engaged to her younger, on-again-off-again millionaire Florida boyfriend, Nick Loeb, who once flirted with running for office until a bad car crash nixed those plans.
Vergara and about 100 of her friends and family are celebrating her birthday on holiday in Mexico, visiting among other sights the Mayan archeological ruins of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan pennisula. Gossip blogs and magazines reported today she also got engaged, after a friend tweeted a picture of Vergara sporting a chunky new rock while enjoying her Mexican vacation. So far, no official confirmation from her rep.
As it happens, Loeb, 37, can afford the rock since he's described as a millionaire Florida-based businessman, originally from Purchase, N.Y., the son of a U.S. ambassador and a cousin of the billionaire Bronfman family. Loeb also dabbled in the producing fields of Hollywood.
But only a few months ago, Vergara and Loeb, who've been dating for about two years, were said to be over. Then, a month later, they were back together. And they were together at the White House Correspondents Association dinner in Washington in April. Apparently, they have a volatile relationship.
Loeb wanted to run for a U.S. Senate seat from Florida but after a car accident in 2010 he changed his mind. With Vergara by his side at a South Beach hotel, he said then he had the passion and the drive, "but the job of U.S. Senator requires physical and mental commitment."
The marriage would be the second for Vergara, who was married to her childhood sweetheart, Joe Gonzalez, from 1991 to 1993; they started dating when she was 16. They have one child, son Manolo, who is nearly 20.
