NEWCASTLE, CA - A baby's body was found Thursday afternoon after a woman noticed a foul odor coming from a trash bag on the side of the road.
The woman reported the smell to a Placer County sheriff's deputy in the area of Green Hills Court, off of Newcastle Road, around 4:45 p.m., sheriff's spokesperson Dena Erwin said.
The deputy checked the bag and found the body of an infant inside. Erwin said detectives were called to the scene and started to canvass the area for witnesses.
An autopsy, which is scheduled for later, will determine the infant's cause of death.
Anyone with information is urged to call the sheriff's office at (530) 889-7800.
