PLACER COUNTY, CA - That tortuous drive from Colfax on westbound Interstate 80 Wednesday afternoon was due to a big rig catching fire requiring both lanes of the freeway to be shut down.

The California Highway Patrol said all lanes were reopened by Wednesday evening, several hours after the truck caught fire.

Witness Craig Cannon said the semi erupted into an inferno when its brakes caught fire. The flames spread to the forest abutting I-80.

The driver got out OK, said CHP Officer Chris Mave. The incident was first reported about 1 p.m.

Traffic was backed up to Gold Run.
