WEST SACRAMENTO, CA - A soldier from West Sacramento died onTuesday while serving in Afghanistan, according to a release from the Department of Defense.

Spc. Manuel J. Vasquez, 22, was supporting "Operation Enduring Freedom."

Vasquez died in Afghanistan's Paktika province, locatedin the southeast region of the country. The Department of Defense has not said how Vasquez died, but a family member said the death is under investigation. The soldier's body was found in a guard tower, according to the family member.

Vasquez served in the second Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade based in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

Vasquez arrived in Afghanistanin August 2011 and was scheduled to leave in June.

According to his Facebook page, Vasquez was promoted to Specialist in January.

Hespent his childhood in West Sacramento and Citrus Heights, where he went to Mira Loma High School.

Several of his family members are also serving in the military.

Family members flew to Delaware to receive the body.
