PLACERVILLE, CA - Highway 50 was closed in both directions near Kyburz on Monday after a big rig collided with a car before overturning and spilled about six to seven tons of sand across the roadway.

Officer McCain withthe California Highway Patrol in Placervillesaid the two-trailer sand hauler was headed west down Highway 50 when it clipped a car heading eastbound, sending the truck into a partial roll before slamming to a stop against the roadside rock face.

The truck driver was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center following the crash. The severity of his injuries was not disclosed.

The driver of the car was not injured, said McCain.

McCain said the CHP expected crews to have thesand cleared from the highway by about1 p.m.
