DAVIS, CA - An act of vandalism over the weekend at the UC Davis campus is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

On Nov. 13, during the UC system-wide Student of Color Conference, a suspect defaced Veteran's Day ribbons tied around a tree by writing "USE ME AS A NOOSE," UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi said.

Katehi said the historical background of the act and the timing of the vandalism has racist implications.

"We do not know if the person who scrawled this offensive graffiti knew about the three-day conference on our campus," Katehi said. "But it is particularly disturbing that such an act of intolerance should occur at a time when the campus community is working to create a safe and inviting space for all our students. In fact, this was just the latest in a recent series of distressing incidents of hate and bias on our campus since the start of the fall quarter."

Police are working to find who is responsible for the graffiti.
