EL DORADO COUNTY, CA - Fall has arrived at Apple Hill in El Dorado County and already droves of people are heading up to take in all the season has to offer.

October is the busiest and the best month at Apple Hill, and this year is shaping up to be a good one.

"We have the biggest crop we've had in years," Larson Farm's Alyssa Exum said

Picking apples and pumpkins and finding the best fudge has become a timeless tradition for one Amador County family.

"You get to eat apples," 5-year-old Alyssa Reilly said.

Her family has been going to Apple Hill since she was just a baby and her "nana" Wendy Pearson had some advice to share with newcomers.

"Try to come on the weekdays, not on the weekends because when you have little ones, long lines aren't great," Pearson explained.

It's no secret, if you want the quiet and calm apple adventure, come during the week. If you must venture out on Saturday or Sunday, here are three tips from the regulars:

  1. Come as early in the morning as possible and get out by early afternoon
  2. To avoid sitting in traffic for hours, take the Schnell School, Point View or Cedar Grove exits, not Carson Road or Camino
  3. There's also a shuttle service or you can try biking

A couple from Reno tried the new two-wheel tradition.

"With a bike, you get to focus on nature," Justin Meitz said.

"You get to go at a slower pace and I feel like it's going to be better that way, you get to take more in," Jessica Gearhart said.

But no matter what day you go, or what wheels you take, you're sure to get your fall fix and fair share of sweet apple goodness at Apple Hill.

And don't forget, "You definitely have to take a pie or two!" Vacaville resident Kevin Kohler said.

There's also a new free app you can download on your smart phone called Apple Hill. It was developed by Mason Visman of Boa Vista Orchards and released this month. The app has a map, coupons, restaurants, lodging and much more.
