PEN America announced the winners of the PEN Literary Awards Wednesday.
Poet Frank Bidart — whose latest collection, Metaphysical Dog, was a finalist for the 2013 National Book Award — received the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry. Cultural critic James Wolcott received the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the art of the essay, for his collection, Critical Mass: Four Decades of Essays, Reviews, Hand Grenades, and Hurrahs.
Tony award-winning playwright David Rabe added the Master American Dramatist award to his shelf. The $25,000 PEN/Bellwether Prize for socially engaged fiction, which was founded by Animal, Vegetable, Miracle author Barbara Kingsolver, was awarded to And West Is West by Ron Childress.
The $25,000 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction will be announced at the awards ceremony on Sept. 29 in New York. The full list of winners is published on PEN America's website.
