During the BIG Day of Giving (BIG DoG), the 24-hour online give-a-thon raised $3,019,863.04. That's more than triple the goal set for the event.

Around 10:15 a.m., BIG DoG surpassed the $1 million mark. Then around 6 p.m., the event raised more than $2 million.

Within the last 10 minutes of the BIG DoG, late night donors helped surpass the $3 million mark.

Nearly 400 Sacramento area non-profit organizations came together for the event on Tuesday, May 6. Donors gave directly to the non-profit organization of their choice, which added to the total amount of donations in the Sacramento region.

"Each dollar raised will get a boost from a pool of $300,000 in matching donations and prize challenges from generous individuals, corporations, and scores of outreach and business partners who will be spreading the word among their employees, customers and vendors," Sacramento Region Community Foundation spokesperson Shirlee Tully said in a statement before the event.

On the day of the event, 18,915 donors participated in the event; organizers estimated 5,000 donors were going to take part.

Last year, donors helped raise $525,000 for organizations in the Sacramento area.

The five charities that raised the most during BIG DoG were:

  1. Sacramento Ballet with 334 donors giving $91,776
  2. Placer Land Trust with 246 donors giving $54,896
  3. Breakthrough at Sacramento County Day School with 70 donors giving $41,810
  4. Sierra Forever Families with 63 donors giving $40,133
  5. KVIE with 284 donors giving $40,085
