West Caldwell, NJ (Sports Network) - Stanley Kinsey fired a 5-under 66 on
Saturday to take the first-round lead of the stroke-play portion of the USGA
Senior Amateur Championship.
Kinsey, 58, recorded the lowest stroke-play score in the tournament since the
2007 edition and matched the second-best score in championship history.
Paul Simson, the 2010 champion, and Jim Holtgrieve are tied for second at 3-
under 68.
Douglas Farr, David Pulk, Mark Bemowski, Terry Werner and Rick Woulfe share
fourth at 2-under 69.
Kinsey, who is playing in his first USGA event, birdied the third, but dropped
a shot with a bogey at the fifth. He closed his front nine with birdies at
seven and nine.
Kinsey birdied the 10th, then tapped in a short birdie putt at No. 13.
"That was a nice gift," said Kinsey, who only missed one fairway on Saturday.
"I felt like I had a lot of nice gifts today, and some curling putts that
happened to go in, but I actually had a couple that lipped out. It was just
one of those days where the ball seemed to have eyes and it felt like I had a
good feel for the speed."
Kinsey kept the momentum going with a birdie at the 14th. That got him to 5-
under par and he stayed at that number after he parred his last four holes.
David Talcott, Chip Lutz, Donald Detweiler and Gary Vanier are knotted in
ninth at 1-under 70.
Defending champion Louis Lee had an even-par 71 in Saturday's opening round.
