Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Danuel House connected on a jumper with 17
seconds left that proved to be the decisive blow as the Houston Cougars downed
the Texas Longhorns, 73-72, in the first round of the College Basketball
Invitational at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Joseph Young scored 18 points, TaShawn Thomas recorded a double-double with 15
points and 10 rebounds and House and Leon Gibson each added 11 points for
Houston (20-12).
Julien Lewis had a game-high 25 points for Texas (16-18) while Myck Kabongo
added 17 points and six assists and Prince Ibeh posted a double-double with
12 points and 11 rebounds to go with five blocks.
Both teams shot below 40 percent from the field in the first period. Houston
led 37-31 at the break by netting a superior 35 percent to Texas' 32.4.
Houston had a 71-66 lead with 3:29 remaining in regulation but Lewis and
Kabongo combined for six unanswered points to pull the Longhorns ahead, 72-71,
with under a minute to play. The Cougars finally answered with House's game-
winner. Texas had a chance to win at the end but Lewis missed a shot attempt
with four seconds left and Ioannis Papapetrou turned the ball over after
collecting the offensive rebound.
The game featured 14 lead changes. Houston had an 11-6 edge in fast break
points.
