Boiling Springs, NC (Sports Network) - Corey Walden netted 26 points and Glenn
Cosey scored 22 points as the Eastern Kentucky Colonials took down the
Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 69-62, in the first round of the
CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament at Porter Arena.
The duo combined to shoot 10-of-13 from 3-point range and swipe nine steals
for EKU (25-7), which has won nine of its last 12. Eric Stutz chipped in 10
points and six rebounds for the visitors.
For GWU (21-13), Donta Harper poured in 17 points on 8-of-12 from the field.
Tashan Newsome had 15 points, Kevin Hartley logged 11 points and nine
rebounds, Jerome Hill hauled in 10 boards and Tyler Strange dished out nine
assists as the Bulldogs' season came to a close.
Neither team shot greater than 43 percent from the field in the second half,
but EKU took a 34-31 lead into intermission by knocking down seven 3-pointers
in the opening 20 minutes.
The Colonials extended their lead to 10 with under nine minutes remaining, but
GWU ripped off a 13-3 run to tie the score at 60-60 with 4:31 to play. The
game was still tied with 1:08 remaining before Walden banked in a 3-pointer as
the shot clock expired, which proved to be the game-winner for EKU.
GWU lost despite outscoring EKU in the paint, 36-14. Neither team took care of
the basketball, with the Bulldogs committing 22 turnovers and the Colonials
coughing it up 20 times.
